Gearing up for May Walk&Wheel Month
All kinds of school and community events are taking shape for the month of May, as part of “Walk&Wheel Month”. Our energetic Cycling Salt Spring committee is expanding upon “GoByBikeBC Week” — May 30-June 6, 2022 — to make it a month-long celebration of healthier ways to get around. Whether on foot, by bike or wheely device, or via bus, you’re invited to join in a number of Island Pathways events planned this May.
In the primary schools, Capital Bike will be offering two skills & safety workshops in early May at Salt Spring Elementary and Fernwood Schools. We also plan to launch a West Coast pilot of the All Kids Bike program for students ages 5-7. During May, students can win prizes for riding the bus, walking, or wheeling to school.
For youth, Next Level Riding will be offering mountain bike skills & safety workshops at Mouats Park for school kids (May 25) and the public with follow-up rides on Tsouhelem Mountain in Cowichan, during the first weekend in June.
For grown-ups and families, join us for a number of social rides around Salt Spring and neighbouring islands and region, with stops at wineries, beaches, and lots of fun along the way. Then, log your rides at www.gobybikebc.com/salt-spring-island/ to win prizes!
And for those over 55-years-old, you’re invited to a weekend-long Bike Freedom skills & safety course being offered by Capital Bike on May 14 at the Salt Spring Island Library and cycling nearby.
Please check the Island Pathways website and Facebook page for additional celebration stations, mechanic clinics, and more. These events are thanks to GoByBikeBC, the SSI Lions Club, ICBC, BC Healthy Communities, and the BC Injury Prevention & Research Unit’s Vision Zero grant. Thanks!
