National Indigenous People’s Day Ride!
In 2009, June was declared National Indigenous History Month in Canada. During this month, Canada celebrates and honors the history, heritage, and diversity of First Nations, Inuit, and Metis Peoples. This month is also a time for Canadians to learn about, appreciate, and acknowledge the strength and resiliency of Indigenous Peoples who have overcome the impacts of colonization, attempted assimilation, and genocide.
On June 21st Canada celebrates National Indigenous People’s Day, which began in 1996 as a proclamation signed by then Governor General of Canada, Romeo LeBlanc. For generations, many First Nations communities have celebrated their culture and heritage on or near this day due to the significance of the summer solstice. National Indigenous People’s Day is an opportunity for Canadians to learn about and celebrate the diverse and unique heritage, language, cultural traditions, and spiritual beliefs of First Nations, Inuit, and Metis Peoples.
There are many events being held in communities across BC and Canada on June 21st. Many nations will be celebrating through art, music, dance, workshops, storytelling, and sharing of traditional foods. Indigenous Tourism BC is a great resource for event listings. Your local library offers a catalog of books, films, and podcasts that support Indigenous authors, filmmakers, and storytellers. This month is a good opportunity to learn about the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s 94 calls to action as a framework for reconciliation between Canada and First Nations as well as the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous People.
This is an excellent time to connect with the Nations whose traditional lands Canadians live and work on and there are numerous resources available online to explore the rich cultural heritage and sovereignty of First Nations communities during this time of recognition and celebration.
